Nature & Wildlife
Where the Jungle Meets the Sea
Charankako Bay sits at the intersection of tropical forest, mangrove wetland, and Caribbean coastline. The property is home to a surprising variety of wildlife, from the basilisk lizards that inspired its name to the colorful marine life visible from the wooden walkways.
The Bosque Enano
(Pigmy Forest)
The Bosque Enano is a mangrove forest ecosystem that stretches along the ocean side of the property. Elevated wooden walkways carry you over the water and through the heart of the forest, offering a close-up view of a habitat that is both nursery and shelter for dozens of species.
The mangroves grow directly in the ocean, their root systems creating a protected environment for young fish, small crabs, and snails. Look beneath the walkway and you may spot sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and jellyfish in the clear water below.

Ironshore Formations
As you walk through the Bosque Enano, you will pass alongside Charankako’s ironshore, ancient coral reef that has risen above the waterline over centuries of geological change. These rock formations are textured with different shapes, colors, and patterns, each one a record of the reef’s history.
