What is Charankako?
The Story Behind the Name
Charankako is the local name for the monkeylala, a basilisk lizard with the remarkable ability to run across the surface of water. These basilisks are found right here on the property, darting across the mangrove waterways and through the ironshore formations along the coast.
The name captures what makes this place special: wild, surprising, and alive with nature.
A Private Beach
on Roatan's West Bay
Charankako Bay opened on November 25, 2025, as a private beach destination in West Bay, Roatan, Honduras. Set between jungle-covered hillside and the Caribbean Sea, the property spans two distinct areas connected by nature.

The Upper Property: Honduras Circa 1950

At the top of the mountain, a winding red stone path leads through the tropical canopy. Here, guests experience ancestral Honduran traditions: pottery making, chocolate crafting from local cocoa, Garifuna cultural demonstrations, a butterfly habitat, and a recreated 1950s sugar mill. A spectacular lookout at the summit offers sweeping views before the journey begins.
The Lower Property: Beach and Bosque Enano
Below, a private beach opens onto the Caribbean. The Bosque Enano (Pigmy Forest) stretches along the coastline, where elevated wooden walkways pass through a mangrove ecosystem teeming with young fish, iguanas, and the basilisks that gave Charankako its name. Ironshore formations, ancient coral reef that has risen above the waterline over centuries, create a dramatic natural landscape.
Part of the Roatan Family
Charankako Bay is part of the Galindo family of properties on Roatan Island. Just a 5-7 minute drive away, Gumbalimba Park offers wildlife encounters, a pirate museum, ziplines, and more, making it easy to pair both destinations into one unforgettable day on the island.
